Elements involved in the process of ethical decision making includes personal values, higher order principles, as well as ethical codes and law. This presentation will review key sources of ethical guidelines for treatment professionals, explore specific ethical dilemmas that impact on the treatment professional including aspects of the client-therapist relationship, boundary violations, disclosure, confidentiality and issues related to malpractice. Additionally, we will critically evaluate benefits of different problem solving options and analyze the outcomes of the decision making process.
Training Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Identify an ethical theory that one can utilize in practice
- Discuss the interrelationship between law and ethics
- Identify at least five ethical dilemmas in clinical practice and how to resolve them
- Describe the major elements of a malpractice case
