As we work with those with substance use disorders it is clear that addressing multiple concerns, including co-occurring mental health and substance use, is essential. During this training attendees will learn to identify co-occurring disorders common among substance users, identify whether it matters which came first, and discuss and identify ways our substance use facilities can engage clients in addressing whatever co-occurring disorders present.
Substances of abuse and medications for mental health concerns will be reviewed. A discussion will be held on how the brain functions during substance use and in recovery. Also, understanding how to discuss medications with physicians will be an important aspect of how we can advocate for our clients with co-occurring disorders.
